The National Model Codes reference hundreds of standards issued by Canadian standards development organizations (SDOs) and others. Referencing such standards is an efficient way to tap into the best available technical expertise and the latest technologies, while keeping the page count of the code documents to a reasonable minimum.
As with the Codes themselves, the content of the documents referenced in the Codes is regularly updated and published. To remain current, the policy of the Canadian Board for Harmonized Construction Codes (CBHCC) is to reference, when appropriate, the latest editions of these documents.
Code users and interested parties are asked to review proposed updates to the tables of referenced documents in the current editions of the National Building (NBC), Fire (NFC) and Plumbing (NPC) Codes and the National Energy Code of Canada (NECB).
Some standards published by bilingual organizations were not available in French as of the preparation of the table for public review. The French standards will be included in the next Codes if available at publication time.
Note that what has been modified in the referenced document, or how it has been modified, is not identified in the tables, nor are the referenced documents provided. It is up to Code users and stakeholders to research these changes and provide relevant comments. The goal of the public review on updates to referenced documents is to determine if there are objections to the proposed changes.
If approved by the CBHCC, these changes will update the documents referenced in the current edition of the NBC, NFC, NPC and NECB. The revised tables of referenced documents will be published in the next editions of the National Model Codes.
