The Canadian Board for Harmonized Construction Codes (CBHCC) is seeking expressions of interest from individuals to be considered for Chair of the Advisory Council for Harmonized Construction Codes (Advisory Council). Applicants have until October 9, 2024 to submit their credentials.
Anyone interested in applying for the position should have experience in the use or development of construction codes, building design, construction, or building use and operations as well as experience chairing group deliberations.

As the CBHCC ramps up planning for the next code cycle, it is looking for a new Chair for the Advisory Council that will play an important role in Canada’s code development system. The Chair will facilitate the work of the Advisory Council, which provides invaluable advice to the CBHCC and helps shape the National Model Codes.
The Advisory Council has a mandate to provide advice to the CBHCC on key policy issues related to Canada’s National Model Codes on behalf of Code users and interested parties. Members of the Advisory Council, including the Chair, are appointed by the CBHCC.
The Advisory Council’s activities include:
- Meeting at least twice a year, or additionally as required;
- Providing advice to, and responding in writing to formal requests from, the CBHCC on the strategic direction of the National Model Codes and on key policy issues related to code development priorities and planning;
- Providing ongoing summary advice to the CBHCC on the overall direction of proposed code changes, focusing on the feasibility, broad implications, and overall direction;
- Providing advice to, and responding in writing for formal requests from, the CBHCC on other code-related matters, including emerging code issues; and,
- Promoting an understanding of the code development process, including opportunities for participation by organizations and individuals with an interest in the National Model Codes.
Current members of the Advisory Council and representatives of member organizations are not eligible to serve as Chair.
Canada’s National Model Codes include the National Building Code of Canada, the National Fire Code of Canada, the National Plumbing Code of Canada, the National Energy Code of Canada for Buildings, and the National Farm Building Code of Canada (last published in 1995). The Codes contribute to the health and safety of Canadians, to the accessibility of buildings, and to safeguarding the environment, while limiting the probability of fire and structural damage to buildings.
Canada’s National Model Codes are developed on approximately a five-year cycle. Electronic versions of the National Model Codes are available for free through the National Research Council of Canada’s (NRC) Publications Archive. Hard copies of code documents are also available for purchase through the NRC Virtual Store.
